Management of Resistance in the Process of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy

Abstract
The concept of resistance originates from psychoanalysis. Resistance can be defined as all the forces within the patient which oppose the procedures and processes of analysis. It defends neurosis of the patient and may be conscious, preconscious, or unconscious. It is very important to deal with resistance properly in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and there are several basic principles in dealing with resistance. The therapist¡¯s task is to recognize its presence, its intensity, and its significance in the patient¡¯s current psychic functioning and to identify the conflict which is being kept from consciousness by analyzing it. The author presents a psychotherapy case of a woman patient with panic disorder and discusses some important issues in proper management of resistance during psychotherapy. By overcoming resistance, it was possible to approach main neurotic conflicts of the patient and make a significant progress in the course of the treatment.
